About Brain Spring Learning

My name is Dorothee Burchartz, and I am the owner of Brain Spring Learning. I received my BA in Mathematics and Economics from Upsala College, East Orange, NJ in 1976, after which I entered the IT field as a programmer, eventually becoming a Business Systems Analyst and Project Manager. But over the past twelve years my focus has been the three children I adopted from Bulgaria. All were school-aged when they arrived, and all turned out to have a learning disability.

Frustrated with the IEP process, the lack of assistance provided by the schools, and the empty promises of "No Child Left Behind", I went in search of other methods of improving my children's ability to learn. I found that many of the cognitive skills programs were too difficult to administer to my own children, too inconvenient to get to, or far too expensive for my budget. Now that I have retired from the IT world, I have turned my passion toward filling that gap for others in my situation. I became a Certified Student Transformation System Specialist™ (certified by Enhanced Learning Skills for Kids, LLC), and created Brain Spring Learning to offer affordable assistance to families who need real, effective, transformational help for their kids.

The name Brain Spring Learning represents the fact that improving the cognitive skills that are the limiting factors to how effectively we learn allows us to "spring up" to a whole new level or plane of learning -- like springing up on top of a rock so you can see further. I also liked the name because it evokes a spring of water emerging from the ground to run freely, or a fresh start after a dreary winter.

I had a number of tutoring jobs when I was in high school and college, and I really enjoy the one-on-one type of teaching. It is very rewarding for me to focus on one student at a time, and be able to give my attention to their individual needs and challenges. While I give a lot of credit to those who do their best to teach to the middle of a class of 20 or 30 students, while trying to hold the attention of those who are either lost or bored, that is not my strength. I want to make a difference in the life of your child, an individual with unique challenges. I want to transform your child, because no child deserves to be "left behind."
